Why it’s on the shelf
I bought this book when I was 13. Windows 95 was the hottest thing in computers, and if you had a Pentium with a CD-ROM drive, oh baby, just a dream come true. The book actually came with a CD-ROM that held, among other things, a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 1.0. (Hmm, bundling a browser, what could go wrong?) Anyway, the book is just an amazing artifact. Flip it open to almost any page, and Bill (or whoever really wrote it) predicts the coming three decades of technology: smart phones, video streaming, e-commerce, all of it. The language is archaic (he keeps calling the internet a “highway”), but the ideas are there, and it’s just incredible to see how much he got right. I love to pull it down sometimes and just marvel at its prescience.
